Introduction the Domain

The Freyburger estate is to be found right at the heart of the Alsace vineyards, at Bergheim, an ancient mediaeval fortified town.

The Freyburger family has lived from wine making from father to son for several generations. As owner managers, we cultivate our own vines, vinify, age and bottle the wine made from grapes that we've gathered ourselves from our own vineyards.

The vineyards cover 12 hectares (30 acres), mainly situated on the best slopes of Bergheim.

In the heart of the "Ribeauvillé Geological Fault Region" , we have planted five Ha (15 acres) of vineyard on very special terroirs, sections called Grasberg (oolitic limestone) Goldesch (clayey-limestone) and Rotenberg (limestone marl).

Furthermore, we have 60 ares (about 1 acre) of vines in the Grand Cru "Altenberg de Bergheim".

This extreme diversity of soils allows us to make characterful, complex wines, which age well when laid down.

Our main production is of Gewurztraminer (31%), but we also grow Riesling (27%), Auxerrois (15%) and Tokay-Pinot gris (10%).

From vine to cellar

We use traditional methods of training and pruning, so that we may produce top quality grapes. For that reason, most of the work, from pruning to harvesting, is done by hand.

We use the more environmentally friendly "rational protection" method to control parasites.

The painstaking care which we take over our vines, allows us exceptionally fine late season harvests to give our sweet wines.

Our vinification methods are equally traditional. We want the wines to show off their terroir to best effect. We therefore believe it is better to leave it to nature rather than technology.

This is why, for example, we allow the yeasts naturally present on the grapes to ferment our wines, rather than using laboratory strains.

Furthermore, our wines are matured in oak vats on fine lees, which gives them a great deal of aromatic finesse. We then bottle them on the property.
